Project Leader: Gergely Maroti PhD

I. Biohydrogen, Biogas

1. Biohydrogen production using phototroph bacteria
- indirect photolysis (indirect metabolic relationship between light harvesting and hydrogen production)
- hydrogenase and nitrogenase enzymes

2. Algae-based hydrogen production
- direct photolysis

Model organism: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

3. Biogas production
- competitive microbiology background for biogas plants
- feedstock research (nature and quantity)

II. Metagenomics

1. Environmental sampling
- processing of soil, air, water, food samples
- processing of special environments (biogas plants, guts, etc.)

2. High-troughput metagenome analyses

- high throughput genomic screening – Next Generation Sequencing (ABi SOLiD platform)
- quantitative analyses of complex microbial communities
- monitoring the dynamic changes of communities

3. Enzyme engineering
- genomic search for novel industrial enzymes with remarkable stability, turnover features
